Enniscorthy Celebrates 1500 Years
In 2010, Enniscorthy Town Council plans to mark the 1,500th anniversary of the existence of Enniscorthy since it was founded by St. Senan in 510 A.D. It is our intention to compile a planned programme of Ceremonies and Events for publication in late 2009 which we hope will detail the many activities that will take place during the anniversary year of 2010.
The 1,500 years covers exciting and traumatic episodes down through the years of the enthralling history of Enniscorthy’s formation and growth as a Market town on the river Slaney in the centre of the Model County – the Vikings, the Normans, Irish Resistance, Oliver Cromwell, 1798 Rebellion, 1916 Rising, great social changes; changes which are still ongoing.
Enniscorthy Town Council is hoping that all schools, churches, businesses, sporting, cultural social groups/clubs/festivals and organisations in the town and its immediate surrounds will also plan events to help celebrate this special anniversary year. We would welcome any suggestions you or your members might have to add to the year’s festivities. Our original plans and expectations for the celebratory year will likely be curtailed somewhat due the ongoing recession but nonetheless we expect it to be a memorable year.
We would love to include as many events as possible in our Special 1500 year Programme of Events brochure and so we are requesting that you contact the undersigned or
